Effects of Water Exercise Program for 24 Weeks on The Body Composition, Health Related Fitness, and Quality of Life in Elders

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of long term water exercise program on the body composition, health related fitness, and quality of life in the aged men and women.

METHOD: Thirteen healthy aged men and 77 aged women participated in the water exercise program voluntarily. The water exercise program was practiced for 60 minutes a day, 3 times a week for 24 weeks. The physiological data were collected before and after water exercise program. The paired-t test were used for finding the significances of mean differences(p<.05).

RESULT: In the body composition, percentage of body fat and waist-to-hip ratio were effectively decreased in the male elders. Also the muscle mass in the female elders were significantly increased, and percentage of body fat and waist-to-hip ratio were significantly decreased. In the health related fitness, strength and endurance were markedly increased in the male elders, and the strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance of the female elders were significantly increased. In the quality of life, subjective health evaluation, ability of physical activity, and physical pain values were positively changed in the female elders. but not in the male elders.

CONCLUSION: Long term water exercise program has the positive effects on the body composition, health related fitness, and quality of life in the aged men and women.
